LASIK vision correction procedures have helped millions of patients see more clearly, without the use of glasses or contacts. The procedure is highly effective, with 99 percent of patients achieving better than 20/40 vision and more than 90 percent achieving 20/20 or better. LASIK has a good record and complications are rare, so most people are satisfied with the results.

Doctors use the LASIK procedure to correct vision problems known as refractive errors. Light carries information about the outside world into the eye. The transparent tissue covering the eye, known as the cornea, bends (refracts) and focuses the light for clear vision. Refractive errors, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, can cause blurry vision. While glasses and contacts can help correct refractive errors, many people find them cumbersome to wear.

LASIK can correct the three main types of refractive errors:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness) – a condition in which you can see nearby items clearly but faraway items are blurry
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness) – a condition in which you can see faraway items clearly, but close-up items are blurry
  • Astigmatism – a condition in which your eye does not focus light correctly

But is LASIK right for you? Answering just four quick questions on the LASIK Candidate Quiz by Illinois Eye Center can help you find out if LASIK could work for you.

The questions are extremely easy. The first question prompts you to select your age group: Under 18, 18 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60+. Next, the questionnaire will ask you to select the type of vision correction you currently use, such as glasses, contacts, both glasses and contacts, or nothing. For the third question, the quiz directs you to check the reasons you use corrective lenses; answers include seeing or reading things far away, seeing or reading things close up, only for reading, and for other purposes. The fourth question asks if a doctor has ever told you that you have astigmatism.

You will enter your email address and name in the fifth and sixth prompts to receive your results. Once you receive your results and decide to move forward with LASIK, you can request a LASIK consultation with Illinois Eye Center for clearer vision without glasses or contacts.
