What is BOTOX?

What is Botox?Chances are you’ve heard of BOTOX® and you most likely know a number of people who have received BOTOX® injections. But do you know what BOTOX® is, how it works and what to expect?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an approved treatment for adults to temporarily improve and reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines around the eyes. It is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and has been approved for use in more than 70 countries. BOTOX® is derived from sources that exist in nature and contains highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum.

Since 2002, 10.9 million vials of BOTOX® Cosmetic have been sold in the U.S. Today, it’s the #1 best selling product of its kind. So how does it work?

First, let’s talk a bit about wrinkles. Wrinkles are the result of a combination of factors. Those factors include, cellular changes that occur over time, the reduction of collagen, damage caused by free radicals in the sun and environment, and muscle activity. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, which causes lines, folds and furrows to develop. When you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract, causing crow’s feet to develop. BOTOX® works beneath the surface of your skin and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes those pesky frown lines and crow’s feet.

Crow’s feet

To treat crow’s feet, your BOTOX® provider will inject the area of the orbicularis oculi (the muscle that frames the side of the eye). This step will be repeated on the other eye. BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces the appearance of crow’s feet by reducing the activity of the orbicularis oculi muscles.

Frown lines

For frown lines, your BOTOX® provider will administer injections into the procerus muscle and the corrugator muscles in your forehead. Injecting BOTOX® into these muscles reduces muscle activity, resulting in a reduction in the appearance of frown lines.

Some patients say that being injected with BOTOX® feels like a tiny pinch. Your BOTOX® provider may use ice or a topical numbing cream before administering your injections. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes. Treatment requires minimal downtime or recovery, and you should be able to resume your normal routine immediately after leaving your provider’s office. You’ll begin to notice results one week following treatment, and results typically last three to four months. You’ll notice that you look like yourself – only a little more rested!
