If you’re worried about frown lines, crow’s feet or other wrinkles making their appearance as you age, you may be wondering whether it’s the right time to get BOTOX®. Only you can ultimately answer that question, but hopefully the following information will help you make an educated decision that you – and your skin – will be happy with.
What Is BOTOX®?
Unless you’ve never picked up a magazine or turned on a TV, chances are you’ve heard of BOTOX®, but you might not know much beyond this treatment’s name. We use BOTOX® Cosmetic, which is primarily used in adults to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. BOTOX® is derived from a naturally occurring bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which is then purified and injected into the muscles surrounding trouble spots to help temporarily minimize the actions of those muscles. There have been more than 10.9 million vials of BOTOX® Cosmetic sold in the United States since 2002 and it’s approved for use in more than 70 countries.
Who Should Use BOTOX®?
Whether or not you’re a good candidate for BOTOX® is up to you and your BOTOX® provider. BOTOX® prescribing information recommends its use for crow’s feet, frown lines and other age-related wrinkles as approved by your doctor or skin care professional.
What Should I Expect?
Each BOTOX® treatment consists of very small doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic injected directly into the muscles around your eyes or between your brows to combat crow’s feet and frown lines. The BOTOX® interrupts the transmission of the nerve impulses responsible for muscle movement. Reduced movement means those muscles literally cannot form those pesky lines you’re used to seeing. The treatment is temporary, lasting up to four months, at which time you can decide whether you want to continue receiving BOTOX®. Curious about first-hand results? What Age Should I Start Using BOTOX®?
Many people believe that BOTOX® is a treatment used by older patients already exhibiting signs of aging, but new research indicates that BOTOX® could be as valuable for preventive care as it is for wrinkle treatments once patients have progressed in age. One plastic surgeon told ABC News that wrinkles form not unlike creases in a piece of paper that has been folded and refolded over and over again; each smile, laugh, frown, or other expression is like folding the paper (in this case, your skin). By starting BOTOX® treatments earlier, people can theoretically keep those creases from forming in the first place, which also means they have no chance to spread or deepen into larger furrows that can be increasingly difficult to treat.
