5 Steps to Beautiful, Healthy Lips This Valentine’s Day

lips.Healthy lips aren’t a concern for many people, but certainly should be! Your lips can tell you a lot about your overall health. If your lips are dry, chapped, cracked, discolored, or swollen, this is an indicator from your body telling you something is off with your overall health. Taking care of your entire body, including your lips, will lead to a healthier body and appearance. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, consider putting some extra love and care towards your lips in the following ways:

  1. Exfoliate Your Lips

Similarly to exfoliating your face a few times a week to get rid of dead or dry skin, you should be sharing the love with your lips as well. A few times a week, exfoliate your lips with a store-bought lip scrub, homemade lips scrub, or by simply using a toothbrush to gently scrub away the built-up dry skin on your lips. A great go-to homemade lip scrub includes a mixture of raw sugar and raw honey.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water daily keeps you and your skin hydrated. Your dry lips are a huge indicator that you are dehydrated and that you need to drink more water throughout the day. As you’ve probably heard before (and for a good reason), it is important to drink eight glasses of water per day to experience the optimal benefits H2O can provide your skin, lips, and overall health.

  1. Protect Your Lips

Using a lip balm daily is great for your overall lip health, but take the extra step in protecting your lips by purchasing a lip balm with an SPF 15 or higher. This will protect your lips from harmful UV rays that can damage your lips. We have all experienced being at the beach all day only to come home to very dry lips because we didn’t put on an SPF lip product beforehand. Even in the winter, harmful UV rays can damage your lips, so be sure to protect them all year long!

  1. Avoid Toxins

Avoid wearing lipstick with dehydrating chemicals that dry out your lips as you wear it. This tends to include long-wear or matte lipsticks. Also, declutter your lip products each year. Whether lipsticks, lip gloss, lip balms, or creams, these products will dry out and grow bacteria over time, so it is a good idea to go through your products regularly. And of course, avoid smoking and try to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

  1. Keep Your Lips Moisturized

Moisturizing your lips is something you should be doing daily, multiple times a day. It is easy to forget about our lip health and take our healthy lips for granted. Prevent issues in the future by caring for your lips today by adding lip moisturization to your daily skincare routine.

A great product that we recommend using is the SkinMedica® HA5 Smooth and Plump Lip System, which supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its hyaluronic acid (HA) for overall skin health. This product uses the technology behind HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator to smooth and moisturize your lips, improving their outline and contours, and reducing the appearance of fine lines. February is a great time to try out this product, as it is one of the products included in our February special, which you can read more about below.
